About the Certification

The Society for Human Resource Management is the world's largest HR professional association, and its certifications are built on the SHRM Body of Applied Skills and Knowledge. The distinguishing feature of SHRM is its explicit dual structure: candidates are examined on both technical HR knowledge and behavioural competencies such as leadership, ethical practice, relationship management and consultation.

SHRM-CP is intended for practitioners who implement HR policies and operate at an operational or tactical level. SHRM-SCP is intended for professionals who design strategy, influence organisational direction and lead HR functions.

Because roughly half the examination consists of situational judgement items, SHRM rewards candidates who can select the most defensible course of action in an ambiguous workplace scenario. Memorisation alone is rarely sufficient.

Certification Levels

1

SHRM-CP (Certified Professional) — for practitioners performing operational HR duties

2

SHRM-SCP (Senior Certified Professional) — for professionals developing HR strategy and leading the function

Who Should Attend

SHRM-CP eligibility combines education and HR experience. As a general guide, a bachelor's degree with approximately one year of HR experience, or a lower qualification with additional years of experience, meets the threshold.

SHRM-SCP requires substantially more experience, typically three or more years in a strategic HR role alongside a relevant degree.

SHRM publishes the definitive eligibility matrix and confirms each application individually. We review your profile against the current matrix before you pay any examination fee.

Assessment format

The examination is computer-based and timed, combining knowledge items with situational judgement items in roughly equal measure. Candidates work through a mix of multiple-choice knowledge questions and scenario questions where several options are defensible but one is clearly best practice.

Our preparation therefore runs two parallel tracks: systematic coverage of the technical body of knowledge, and structured practice on situational judgement reasoning using explained answers.
