About the Certification

The HR Certification Institute is the oldest dedicated HR credentialing body and offers the broadest ladder of qualifications, from entry level through senior strategic practice. It is particularly well recognised in the Gulf and wider Middle East, where the international variants PHRi and SPHRi are widely held.

HRCI credentials are strongly aligned to technical mastery of HR functional areas: talent acquisition, learning and development, total rewards, employee relations, risk management and, at senior levels, business leadership and strategy.

For practitioners who want a clearly staged progression — beginning with aPHR while early in their career and advancing to PHRi and then SPHRi — HRCI offers the most granular pathway of the three bodies.

Certification Levels

1

aPHR (Associate Professional in Human Resources) — entry level, no HR experience required

2

aPHRi — the international equivalent of aPHR

3

PHR (Professional in Human Resources) — operational and tactical practice

4

PHRi — the international equivalent of PHR, widely held across the Middle East

5

SPHR (Senior Professional in Human Resources) — strategic and policy-making practice

6

SPHRi — the international equivalent of SPHR

Who Should Attend

aPHR is open to candidates with no prior professional HR experience, which makes it the most accessible entry point of the three certification bodies.

PHR and PHRi generally require one to four years of professional HR experience depending on your level of education.

SPHR and SPHRi require four to seven years of experience in a strategic or policy-influencing HR role, again scaled to your academic qualification.

HRCI publishes the authoritative eligibility table and approves applications individually.

Assessment format

HRCI examinations are computer-based, timed and predominantly multiple choice, with a defined weighting across functional areas that is published in each exam content outline. Some items are pre-test questions that do not count toward your score.

Because the weighting is public, preparation can be allocated precisely. Our courses distribute study time in proportion to each functional area's examination weight, and our question bank mirrors the same distribution.
